hellooo been a while since i've updated. been busy reading & studying for my qualifying exams at the end of this year (🥲). this summer was both slow and hectic, a kind of simmering anxiety interspersed with long bike rides and home-cooked dinners with friends. so much 西红柿炒鸡蛋. trying to sleep earlier and check my phone less. i'm getting better at finding a steady rhythm for work, reading in the mornings/afternoons, decompressing with zine-making + sketching in the evening. we had an onion zine night last week, and i made this character sheet for an onion paladin. fun!

it took me a few months to realize that if it ain't broke, don't fix it—i'm back to zonelets! i think i'm better off with a simpler blog engine since i really haven't had the time to tinker and customize my site as much as i'd like, and i'd rather have something easier to navigate, less piecemeal... added some custom fonts and styling, but otherwise, this feels like a nice return to essentials :-)

big site redesign! wanted to have an easier nav system, so i added a header bar and direct links to the main site pages. also redid the landing pages for my writing/cycling posts, as well as the "lately" page, so that everything is visible on tables with dates and titles. planning to use the homepage to link to my latest posts... will probably tinker a bit more, but i think it's a bit easier to move around for now.

phew! haven't had the chance to update this space in a bit. i'd always known teaching was a lot of work, but didn't quite realize until now how much energy it drains from other corners of your life, as fulfilling as it can be, too... nothing like a constant deluge of emails & grading to fill the days 😵💫
i've made slow progress on the long poem, mostly little couplets and tercets here and there, & some more experimental pages. still unsure of its direction but glad for it to be in movement, at the very least.
not much energy on the weekends to do anything other than decompress and watch movies. as far as resolutions & hobbies go, i've been trying to sketch a small object every night before bed...
working on adding a "rec" section for poems, music, texts, films, things i've been paying attention to in my spare time. for now, here's some sunset rollercoaster ✨🐟✨

some more updates for the site: added a page for Void Moths, which i wrote in 2020. i had it up on gumroad but folks have been asking about free copies, so i decided to move it here!
i haven't really been in the habit of making resolutions for the past few years, but this year i think there are a few things i'd really like to work on / keep at:
- drawing: i want to practice sketching again (starting with landscapes, then moving on to bodies). no painting for now!
- cooking: less takeout! more meal prep!
- writing: i'll have my work cut out for me in terms academic stuff, but i want to give myself more time for poems and experimental pieces...
hopefully i can share my progress on these things here, esp. for my friends who aren't on socials. happy new year!

spent some time updating the site today! if you've been following, you'll notice that it looks a bit different. i loved using zonelets and thought it was really nice as an alt blogging engine, but i wanted a bit more flexibility with css (& also didn't want to mess with js, since i'm still figuring out html basics 😬). i'm using one of elliott's templates now, which has been a good static-site platform for a beginner coder like me. there are still a few hiccups i'm working through, and i have plans to play around with formatting, but for now, i hope folks like it!

just released a small printable game on itch for the soupbone zine: you can play it here! — for my faraway friends, for tarot paths, for serpentine dreams

long evening walk. i'm still not used to this cold, though i do love passing under the claws of dark branches, mile after mile, their wildness reaching above neat windows glazed with lamplight. bladed wind: i need to keep my ears covered. sometimes walking in this neighborhood feels like a fairy tale, only in the way that fairy tales are haunted and spectral and laced with the sound of labored breaths, the sky wheeling overhead.
george’s work was featured on poem-a-day recently—congrats george!—so i decided to explore some of their other poems; "searching for a palestinian necropastoral (eve)" opened something in me, especially these lines:
"the wilderness rotting
at the center of me—crater of me, tender cesspool
unaccounted for, unnameable aside from the complacency
of latex & in the tempt of men I will
not fable, not legend, or border between."

poem today: kiki petrosino's sonnet crown, happineſs 👑
"I believe in mineral lozenges
formed in the hot black throats
of pine forests, & in the hard belt
pine forests make
as they buckle, at long last
over the beloved larynx.
In the Theory of the Beloved
the living make do with tiny lights.
We wake up in the deep hours
to track where the body has gone:
gem of empty air, brilliant among violets."

went for a walk in the brrr brisk cold, bought some arancini and snacked on the beach. saw a withered branch poking out from the sand and it looked like a fossil, some kind of vertebra. spooky!

- moon song: makgeolli, peach juice, lemon, blueberries (a mood ring cocktail we made for the housewarming party; it was very good!)
- the dentist kept talking about “good bones” during my appointment, which i assumed was in reference to the maggie smith poem, until i realized she was, in fact, talking about the home renovation show “good bones”
- reading diane seuss's frank:sonnets & thinking about how she writes sweetness not in the pleasant sense but as the thing that makes your mouth foam, that makes you feral
- from mitra's horny little show: "moderation is for those who expect happiness to come again"
